I would love to see statistics on the number of people holding mutual funds that passively track the S&P500. It's common wisdom - ask your doctor, dentist, or lawyer whether he/she has some. Ask the guys who have been in the market for a long time, the buy and hold types. Government retirement funds all hold it, big institutions all hold it. Every time the S&P 500 starts to tank, someone big steps in. No way they're going to let that baby crash. It can go down, obviously, but whenever it spikes down, someone steps in.
