As more Hispanics "realize the American dream" and move from lower class to middle class, then -- according to you -- more of them should switch their party registration from Democratic to Republican.

However, if we look at the African-American example, such has not occurred, even though there are now hundreds of thousands more African-Americans in the middle class than, say, 30 years ago. In fact, the Republican Party appears to be losing ground with this particular minority, based on the fact that Gore won 91 percent of the African-American vote Nov. 7 compared to GWB's 9 percent.

Ergo, economic prosperity is a poor indicator of switching from the Democratic Party to the Republican Party.

Further, if you delete the Cubans from the Hispanic census, then the percentage of Hispanics voting solidly Democratic jumps to 75 to 80 percent.

I suspect the reason that the Hispanic and African-American minorities in this country vote Democratic is because the Republican Party's platform is based on "We've made our money; screw everybody else."
