Mike & Sid, Even knowing the pre-tax of methanol and gasoline, it is necessary to know the calorific values of each fuel to be able to put them in perspective. For eg., say the pretax prices are equal per gallon, but that each gallon of methanol yields half the calories as a gallon of gasoline, then the fuel cell would cost the same to run as a gasoline engine if the fuel cell were twice as efficient. And, if the cell were three times as efficient, the gasoline engine would cost 50% more.

To compare fuels you need (true) price per gallon and mpg; or miles per unit energy AND energy density. Anything else is misleading.
