DWDM market to grow eight-fold to $25 billion by 2006, analyst says

OYSTER BAY, N.Y. -- While the networking market is experiencing its first downturn right now, the dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) business is still expected to grow by more than eight-fold by 2006, according to a new report from Allied Business Intelligence Inc. (ABI) here.
In total, the worldwide market for DWDM systems and components is expected to grow from $3 billion in 2000 to $25 billion by 2006, according to ABI, a market research firm based in Oyster Bay, N.Y.
The growth includes the market opportunities for DWDM multiplexers and erbium doped fiber amplifiers (EDFAs) in long-haul networks.
"The market for DWDM [multiplexers] has the potential for more than doubling that amount if certain conditions are fulfilled," said Michael Kujawa, who follows the market for ABI.
"The real question is not whether or not this market is huge," he said. "Everyone who operates a private or a public network will eventually be using DWDM equipment."
The three key forces driving the DWDM equipment market are enterprise services on the business side, two-way CATV on the consumer side, and long-haul capacity on the carrier sector. |
