From Merrill:
NAS Winning TCO War
The total cost of ownership per GB per annum (excluding business costs of downtime) is 65% lower for Network Appliance than for EMC. Less than two-thirds of EMC installations matched Network Appliance data availability metrics of 99% and above.
- INPUT
NAS continues to improve its reliability numbers, and it looks like NetApp's filer may have just passed EMC's Symmetrix given the data from the INPUT study.
NAS has offered a lower cost of ownership than SAN, but to see the annual cost for NAS at $2.8K per GB and SAN at $7.7K per GB is striking. We believe the NAS approach of using file level communication rather than block level will allow NAS to enjoy a major cost advantage.
