In 19 months of observing:

1 client wiped out by day trading. It took almost a year to lose about $60K.

20-30 clients wiped out by holding long positions - usually one over a few weeks.

The $25K rule is misguided, IMO. On the flip side, however, the traders with bigger accounts are happy that they will now get 4:1. The $25K distinction is huge - a difference of $75K buying power once you pass that amount. It seems so contradictory - if you have $24K you are a helpless amateur that we must protect, $25K and you suddenly become so competent that we give you quadruple margin.
