Problems ahead for GWB in the Middle East. Seems like his "let's show 'em all who's boss" policy ain't playing so well with our Arab friends.

UAE Rejects Powell's Remarks on Jerusalem

DUBAI (Reuters) - The United Arab Emirates said on Saturday it was ``deeply astonished and disturbed'' at remarks by Secretary of State Colin Powell calling Jerusalem the capital of Israel.

The official WAM news agency said UAE Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Sheikh Hamdan bin Zaid al-Nahayan told the U.S. ambassador to Abu Dhabi that Powell's remarks were not in line with Washington's declared policy on Jerusalem.

``Mr. Powell's remarks constitute a dangerous precedent and a deviation from the known U.S. policy on Jerusalem since 1947,'' WAM said Sheikh Hamdan told the U.S. diplomat.

Powell on Wednesday referred to Jerusalem as Israel's capital and said President George Bush was committed to moving the U.S. embassy to the city from Tel Aviv but gave no date.

Israel seized Arab East Jerusalem in the 1967 Middle East war and annexed it in a move not recognized by the international community. Israel regards East Jerusalem as part of its capital. Palestinians want East Jerusalem to be the capital of their future state.

Earlier on Saturday local newspapers quoted Qatar, current head of the 56-member Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC), the world's largest Muslim body, as similarly rejecting Powell's remarks.

``Qatar rejects these statements as well as the resolutions taken by the U.S. Congress recognizing Jerusalem as Israel's capital and approving the transfer of the U.S. embassy to the city as a violation of U.N. Security Council resolution 478,'' an official statement said.

The Saudi-based Muslim World League on Friday accused Powell, who toured the Middle East last month, of siding with hawkish Israelis, saying his remarks were based on ``the falsification of history.''

Gulf Arab commentators have also denounced the remarks and said they made Arabs lose hope of a more balanced Middle East policy under Bush's administration.
