Finnish 3G rollout delayed due to lack of terminals
From our Helsinki Reporter
The Finnish 3G network is not going to be in large use in the beginning of year 2002. Although the construction work is proceeding as scheduled, the handset manufacturers have announced that they will not be able to deliver 3G mobile phones to the market fast enough to cover the high volumes. According to Nokia's estimate, 3G mobile phones will be available in the third quarter 2002 and delivered in high volumes in the fourth quarter.

The Finnish 3G licenses were given in spring 1999 in a beauty competition to four Finnish network operators: Sonera, Radiolinja, Telia and Suomen 3G, which is an operator owned by local telephone companies. The operators invested together US$2.3 million in the licenses.

Despite the delay, Finland is still one of the leading countries to set up a 3G network. In other European countries the construction work has been delayed because the operators are struggling with the huge licensing fees collected in the license auctions.
