It's probably because the book value includes a lot of "goodwill" from the merger. that fully skews most internet/comunications/nasdsaq stock book values. over time they have to amortize the "goodwill" which is just basically an intangible creation of your imaginitive minds which is supposedly accounting for the inherent value of technology/people/ideas . So basically they ahve to amortize it out as a loss over time and then it should make things more meaningful.
