No one understands economics. Saying you understand economics is like saying you understand history. You may know some of the past but that doesn't mean you understand the big picture except in a very general way, much less that you can predict the future. What's worse, there are schools of economics, which means that the economists who belong to different schools look at history with a built in bias, usually biased in the way they want the future to come out, or think the future should come out.
