I wish you the best o' luck, for I fear you'll need it. I completely agree that for decades ltb&h is a great (maybe even the best) strategy. IMO, the market can be very dangerous and to expect one approach to always work, is expecting too much.

You seem concerned that your portfolio may outlive your body.

No matter what is one's age, the prospect of one's capital depreciating for decades should be cause for concern. It may well be that you will have to live through a secular bear to appreciate the problem. They are very different from bear corrections.
