Yes, debt by itself may not get people to completely change their ways, but if we start to see layoffs on a more massive scale, that I think can scare people. The only way that heavy debt load can get paid off is if people are working. Remember this downdraft in prices is not over and in the case of the DOW may just be beginning.

It's easy to say you're a long term holder of stock in a bull market. Hard times force people to change the way they views things. I think they will also force people to change some of the habits picked up over the last ten years. What I am really interested in is what happens from here. What kind of recovery or bottoming period must we go through before things get better. We've gone down so far so fast will it takes months or years before we begin to see the life come back into equities. I don't think anyone has the answer to that question. Heck, how many of the pros even saw this coming. Perhaps another topic we could punch holes in sometimes would be the merits (or lack of) of trading off the fundamentals vs the technicals. I think this past year has shown just how few people manage to capture exactly what's going on.
