Went to Callaway Gardens yesterday. It was an absolutely gorgeous day....low 70's and mostly sunny. Little Man and I walked..... a LOT... and enjoyed the beautiful flowers and birds.

We caught the Birds of Prey show and witnessed the most magnificent bird.....an American Bald Eagle! Now wait before you get upset!!! He was there because he was born with a deformed beak and could not hunt and feed himself. He is being raised to educate people on the dangers of pesticides and to teach the young about how important preservation is. They believe the pesticides are what caused the deformity.

The Gardens have had him at the sanctuary for 6 months but this was his first week at flying for an audience....he was beautiful. It will be so neat to go back every month and see how he has grown and to watch his head turn to that beautiful white. To be so young, he had an enormous wingspan! We were seated on the very front row...just five feet from this wonderful bird....he made the neatest sounds!!

Also in the show, there is a Redtail Hawk, a Redchested Hawk and the best of all....a Perigen(?) Falcon. The birds fly from the "tree-houses" over the benches and just breeze over your head by inches! The speed of the Falcon was incredible. They have other birds at times in addition to those above...one was a Barn Owl which was so beautiful!
