QUALCOMM Incorporated (Nasdaq: QCOM - news), pioneer and world leader of Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) digital wireless technology, today announced the MSM6000(TM) solution, the first integrated circuit and software solution of the QUALCOMM CDMA Technologies (QCT) MSM6xxx Mobile Station Modem (MSM(TM)) family using radioOne(TM) Zero Intermediate Frequency (ZIF), a direct conversion, architecture. The MSM6000 solution, including the radioOne RF components, enables handset Bill-of-Materials (BOM) manufacturing cost savings of more than US$10 per unit compared with today's lowest-end IS-95A/B handset BOM. The complete MSM6000 solution cuts the total number of radio components in half, shortens handset development and test times, simplifies RF calibration, and enables higher handset production yields. These features contribute to significantly reducing overall handset design and manufacturing costs as well as shortening time-to-market.

The MSM6000 solution is fully backward compatible with IS-95A/B, and is optimized to support voice and basic data capabilities while enabling cdma2000 network benefits, including a seamless migration path to 3G services and applications, and improved voice capacity in the cdma2000 network.
An entry-cost solution, the MSM6000 device significantly reduces radio BOM costs and improves handset standby-time up to 50 percent over IS-95A/B while still enabling standard multimedia features such as Compact Media Extension (CMX(TM)) with MIDI sound synthesizer software, Voice Recognition and support for Removable Universal Identity Module (R-UIM) cards. This solution will allow manufacturers and operators to meet the needs of subscribers who require voice and basic data capabilities with the option to easily upgrade -- using the same network -- to higher-tier cdma 2000 handsets, features and services.
The MSM6000 solution supports two-way Short Messaging Service (SMS) applications and data rates of up to 14.4 kilobits per second (kbps), and is compliant with IS-2000 Release 0, which addresses key attributes of network voice capacity improvements and significantly extended standby times. The MSM6000 device is offered in a 208-ball Fine-Pitch Ball Grid Array (FBGA) production package, enabling handset manufacturers to use the same radioOne architecture with a range of pin-compatible MSM6xxx series baseband chips to design handsets that address a variety of market tiers.
