Ah, but looking at the economy now... how keen would Gore be to be in charge? He wouldn't have the excuse which Bush is likely to make, after all. On which point, I've heard much of the slowdown being blamed on consumer/corporate perception. Basically, people hear that there is (not just 'might be', or even 'will be', but 'is') a recession in the US. [Not so, BTW, a recession is at least two quarters of negative growth; last Q was +1.1% growth]. Therefore they grow fearful about their future, worried about the economy, so they spend less, or in the case of businesses slow hiring, cut investment, destock - which in turn actually causes genuine slowdown. As the economic figures still show, there's no actual mass layoffs, employment, PPI and sales are still strong - but in the last 3-4 months, confidence has suddenly and dramatically fallen, in a way that will surely presage the above problems.
This being the case... isn't there a rather good case for blaming any actual recession on that party and its leading individuals which for the last 6 months have been yammering on how the US is or will imminently be in recession? |
