Little Joe, my common sense analysis. Humans are complex chemistry sets. One's genes defines set points in the basic chemistry. One's genes also define the stiffness and various points of stability and degrees of hysterisis between the points. This chemistry set the human interacts with and is exposed to chemical and sensory inputs. This exposure and interaction can modify the stiffness and various points of stability and degrees of hysterisis between the points.
If one thinks of these points as colors for example the sum of the colors represents a shade and the shade changes differently at different rates and through different ranges of colors or shades as life's journey if not aborted continues.

Feelings, sickness, ability, adapt as the chemistry of life goes on. Over time a more complete understanding of the chemistry of genes will allow a better understanding of who we human are and can be. If you think about the model I've described above all states of human behavior can be defined.
