If you had sat through 50-plus bargaining sessions with the corporate suits, as I have, you would understand where I'm coming from.

I didn't realize that you were a union official rather than rank and file. That certainly explains your point of view. I think that if one is in a union shop, it is possible (although not necessarily required) to be satisfactorily represented by a union.

The environment with which I am most familiar is one where bargaining unit employees are "represented" by officials elected by a relatively small number of dues-paying members. Employees are just amazed when they discover that, if they want to form a committee to address an issue with management, management cannot legally work with them on the issue. They don't understand this and they are horrified when they find out. Last year I was in communication with an organization that was faced with a vote on whether or not to bring in a union. Fortunately, they opted to take their chances with management.

I agree with you that management can be real jerks, but then so can union officials. Union officials often negotiate for the benefit of the union rather than for the union members. I'd rather keep the total number of jerks in the equation to a minimum.
