I think I found the reason for the fall in VVUS shares. A wire came in about a big shareholder suddenly turning neutral or bearish on the stock and selling off a large portion of his holdings:

Dow Jones Online News, Friday, June 6, 1997 at 16:50

NEW YORK -(Dow Jones)- Vivus (NASDAQ:VVUS) shares fell 8.5% today as large shareholder and cyber-urologist Tunica Albuginea (aka Tuna) announced that he sold 2/3 of his VVUS shares yesterday. Many investors saw this as a negative sign since he had previously set a $400 target on VVUS, and sold his shares at 12% of his target price. Mr. Albuginea stated that the volatility of VVUS shares, stemming from the fact that bio-medical companies follow certain patterns that he learned in medical school, gave him a sell sign that day. Mr. Albuginea has refused to elaborate on exactly what similarities he saw in the price movements of VVUS, and what he learned in medical school...

(later in the article)

....one shareholder has expressed interest in attending medical school to learn the secrets of Wall Street....
