OT --

There's often a disjoint between the positive uses of advanced technology and the negative possibilities if taken to extremes. It's been decades since I first read that robots would load and unload my dishwasher. My kids will learn to do it without being asked long before robots replace them. Why didn't scientists work on brain implants instead? "Wet towel. . . hang on towel bar." "Dirty plate . . . put in dishwasher." "Stinky running shorts. . . take to laundry room." "Noxious smell. . . clean kitty litter. . ."

Ah, but I dream.

Incidentally, in conversation with SDL/JDSU, I'm told no expansions have been stopped. All are progressing as originally planned. The big unknown is carrier spending further out. Instead of multi-year contracts, they've signed shorter deals. This is what I leaned after the Asian Telecom conference and according to my sources, there's been no change. Interest rate drops will improve the industry. So it's still a matter of waiting for Greenspan. And even then, it'll take at least six months before we see the impact, but at least it'll get the momentum going in the right direction.
