Not favoring gay marriage is not necessarily a manifestation of hatred. Questioning the appropriateness of "hate laws" is not the same as defending one's right to hate.

Even if homosexuality were a comparatively harmless deviance, at this point in time people need to be encouraged to be steadier in their erotic relationships. Families will be more stable and sexuality will be less predatory, if people are not as prone to "follow their bliss. It sends the wrong signal to say that homosexuality is perfectly acceptable, and even place it on the same footing as heterosexual marriage. Almost every argument that has been used to make homosexuality appear to be more acceptable could be used to dull our opposition to destructive sexual practices.

As for "hate crimes", one cannot be penalized for the "message" involved in a criminal act. However, there is already latitude to take into account aggravating factors, like hostile intent, under certain circumstances. For example, vandalism is worse if it is used as a means to force someone to move through intimidation, and sentencing can reflect that. Thus, in most instances hate crime legislation is either unconstitutional or superfluous.
