What matters is that people could legally form a household with another person and grant that person legal rights in inheritance and medical decisions that have been traditionally associated with marriage.

Nadine, wouldn't it be a whole lot easier and less controversial to just get rid of inheritance taxes and give everybody a check-off on their drivers' licenses for medical decisions whether they're married or not? Why create a whole new category of marriage or household? Seems to me there are easy ways to manage the inequalities. Why make those two widows go through some process to form a household?
