HP Says It's No. 2 In UNIX Servers (03/12/01, 8:59 p.m. ET) By Reuters
SAN FRANCISCO—Hewlett-Packard Co. retained its No. 2 spot for sales of UNIX servers last year, a Hewlett-Packard executive said Monday.
Sun Microsystems Inc. (stock: SUNW) led the server market sector and IBM (stock: IBM) came in third, Mark Hudson, a Hewlett-Packard manager for world wide marketing, told Reuters in an interview, quoting research from International Data Corp.
"For calendar '00, we expect that we will be solid No. 2 UNIX overall," Hudson said. He said the numbers were confirmed by IDC, an industry benchmarker that is due to release its report of the market on Wednesday.
IBM will announce good results for the fourth quarter, Hudson added, saying that historically Big Blue does well then, since salesmen facing IBM's fiscal year end, which roughly matches the calendar year, push product.
"We did OK in Q4, not great," Hudson said.
UNIX servers comprise a huge market, and are generally seen as a middle ground between high-end mainframe computers and the lower-end boxes.
Sun, which has recently led the UNIX market, maintained its position and IBM was third, Hudson said when asked if those rankings from 1999 stayed the same.
