I assume you're not a first grade teacher. I talk to one every day and have two more in training. What you say is bunk. Pushing kids beyond the point where their brains have physically developed to handle what you are trying to teach them is the problem. That, and motivation. Kids who don't see parents reading don't feel that reading is essential to them, so they don't put the effort in, and don't learn. Why learn something which is hard work when you see no benefit from it? Just because a teacher tells you to? Paugh. They learn by example from their parents that enjoyment comes from a TV, not books. TV they can handle. Why worry about books? No pre school, head start, etc. can change this. Until parents change, children won't learn.
