From the beginning, the promise of the net was its potential power as a medium to generate advertising dollars.

I do not think the potential for advertising dollars was ever the main promise of the internet. Instead, it is a powerful medium for communication and information especially as it pertains to business. It changes relationships of everything that has a use for it. The potential is still there and will continue to improve and change with technology.
