My personal "Fat Lady" number is a portfolio valued at 10X your annual gross income. That's provided you don't intend to upgrade your standard of living. Since you're a youngster with a growing family, I'd think 15X would be more appropriate.

This really doesnt seem like much to me....especially if you have a family. If your portfolio matched the Nasdaq over the last year, you would have gotten killed. I'm not sure we all need to be as conservative as MB (7 years worth of living expenses outside of his portfolio) but I would think that a couple of years is a pretty good idea. Of course, it all depends on your risk profile.
