A lot of people had big gains in 2000, Pat. Not everyone rode their stocks down to the bottom (I'll claim a 50:50 on my holdings and wish I could make better use of my hindsight <ggg>). I don't think that a big chunk of the sales taking place right now are related to paying on 2000 gains where the taxes weren't reserved against but I do have a good friend who is a tax pro and he told me the same as OWN STOCKS posted; the number of people coming in who had big gains in 2000 and didn't set aside the taxes is many and a lot of them are now biting into their core to cover the tax bill.
