So are you saying that Head Start is a needless program and should be eliminated? That thinking certainly runs counter to what Laura Bush hopes to achieve during her four years as First Lady. She is a big proponent of Head Start -- especially improving the program's reading component -- is she not?

For what it's worth, yes, I have talked to elementary school teachers and school board members. All have said that when a Head Start child enters kindergarten, he or she is ready to learn right away, and the teacher doesn't have to spend weeks and even months teaching socialization skills, etc.

The fact of the matter, of course, is that not every child can be raised at home by a loving parent whose only job is to "take care" of the family. There are many homes in which both parents work by necessity, or in which the only parent must work to provide an income for the family. Hence, Head Start allows these economically or parentally deprived children a chance to enter school on a somewhat equal footing with the children you describe.
