3Com Sets New Mark of Excellence in Fast-Growing IP PBX Market
(BusinessWire, 03/13/2001 10:17)

SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 13, 2001--

"Product of the Year" Awards Prove 3Com(R) Voice Solutions are

Innovative, Reliable and Simple-to-Use

Customers seeking a highly reliable, award-winning business telephone system with U.S. and international reach can turn to the 3Com(R) NBX(R) 100 Communications System. 3Com's networked telephony system recently won "Product of the Year" in two leading-edge telephony publications and started shipping in 45 countries. 3Com Corporation (NASDAQ:COMS) is rapidly expanding its easy-to-use, feature-rich telephone solutions in terms of new market penetration and technology innovation.

"3Com has a superior voice solution that continues to soar in the fast-growing IP telephony market," said Gene Nelson, general manager and vice president of 3Com's Business Network Group. "The new 'Product of the Year' awards and the number of customer success stories clearly show that the market has embraced the proven reliability of the business-ready 3Com NBX system."

In January 2001, Internet Telephony awarded 3Com's NBX 100 business telephone system with "Product of the Year" for LAN telephony. The NBX 100 system also won Communications Solutions(TM) "Product of the Year" in January 2001 and TMC Labs Innovation award in November 2000. The NBX system has won awards in Europe, such as the Crystal Disc Award at the InvexTrade Fair where 49 entries, including Cisco's LAN telephony system, competed and were runners-up to the winning 3Com networked telephony system. In addition, the NBX 100 system was named winner of Grand Prix Komputer Expo 2001 in network hardware and software category.

"The awards underscore 3Com's vision, leadership and execution for delivering a reliable business telephone system using the latest in telephony technology," said Nelson. "Combining 3Com's traditional data expertise with the telephony expertise we have developed, we have a business telephone solution that is giving 3Com the most competitive position in the market for 21st century voice solutions."

Some of the 45 countries in which 3Com is shipping include Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Colombia, France, Germany, Italy, New Zealand, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland. 3Com NBX systems support regional technology standards for telephone services.

Last month, 3Com announced its new SuperStack(R) 3 NBX Networked Telephony Solution, which is part of 3Com's family of IP PBX products designed to replace traditional business phone systems while leveraging industry-standard data networks.

Market Growth Opportunity

According to Synergy Research, the IP PBX market is expected to grow from $213 million during CY 2000 to $3.9 billion in revenue with over 19 million lines shipped in 2005. By 2005, Synergy estimates that IP PBX systems will represent nearly 20% of all PBX sales.

"Customers are choosing 3Com because of the radical simplicity. For example, the 3Com NBX system makes the adds, moves and changes of telephones in a company easy for customers, bypassing the limitations of traditional PBX-based systems," said Nelson. "This helps to make 3Com the company to beat in a time of market growth."

Customers Rave about NBX

New customers are coming out strong in support of the superior qualities of the 3Com NBX business telephone system - simplicity, reliability, innovation and cost savings.

AIDS Healthcare Foundation

Pablo Roman, director of IT Services, AIDS Healthcare Foundation, said, "With 3Com's NBX solution, we now have a reliable, versatile communications platform that simplifies our phone communications and saves us a tremendous amount of money."

Berkeley Enterprises

Jay Gauthier, executive vice president and co-founder, Berkeley Enterprises, said, "The 3Com solution is less expensive than traditional PBX phone systems and eliminated the expense of an entirely separate wiring infrastructure just for phones. The system simply offers the best price/performance value on the market."

Frictionless Commerce

Miran Fernandez, director of network operations, Frictionless Commerce, said, "Telephones will always play an important role in business. With the NBX system, we're using tomorrow's telephone technology today. The system gives us all the features and control we need, and its built-in scalability will support additional users as we grow."

Cincinnati Country Day School

Dr. Jeffry A. Spain, network administrator for Cincinnati Country Day School, said, "A big advantage of the NBX system is its simplicity and ease-of-use. We can move phones around as needed without incurring the costs and hassles of using a service technician. Since NBX is Ethernet-based, we're able to rely on our existing network infrastructure for phone service without a need to use separate cabling. Moreover, the scalability of the NBX system ensures we'll meet our telephone needs well into the future."

Innogy/Cogen, United Kingdom

"Basically, we had two options," said Chris Legge of Innogy/Cogen. "We could either extend the existing voice network to our second site, or make the leap and try IP telephony. Both had their advantages, but in the end, the 3Com solution delivered on so many of our requirements that we felt the investment was worthwhile."

Gestrim, Credit Foncier's real estate subsidiary, France

"We chose 3Com's NBX 100 Communications System because it is one of the most efficient systems on the market offering all the functionality of a new generation PBX. We currently use the 3Com NBX 100 system at five sites and over the coming weeks will be connecting more than 700 users across 42 sites," says Gabriel Bensimon, project director at Gestrim, Credit Foncier's real estate subsidiary. "The beauty of the system is that for all these sites, we will only need one administrator."

Radio Algoa, South Africa

"This system has quite simply just made life that much easier in the office," says engineer in charge, Jacques Wessels. "Day to day telephone activities remain unchanged, but every now and then an important message on voice mail gets things done, or that urgent conference call is not a problem to realize, or putting call policies in place is not a costly and time consuming process."

Lomma Kommun, Sweden

"The system has already proven to be a powerful, cost-effective tool that has allowed us to reduce costs, streamline operations and prepare for growth well into the new century," says Peter Nisula, IT manager at Lomma Kommun. "Half of our eighty buildings were not connected to our central switchboard so we actually had to make an external call to talk to a fellow member of staff which meant that our phone bills used to be astronomical."

Vienna Museum of Fine Arts, Austria

"The museum represents a symbiosis of the traditional and the modern," says Wilfried Seipel, managing director of the Vienna Museum of Fine Arts. "New technologies and innovative solutions such as the LAN telephone system from 3Com provide the basis for the museum to keep pace with new developments. Cost savings of around 30 percent combined with the competence and know-how of the consultant team made it easy to decide in favor of the 3Com solution. Plus the system offers simple, flexible operation."

Rich Connectivity in 3Com Telephone System

The NBX system provides a myriad of options for rich connectivity, including support for leading standards and protocols, such as Ethernet and IP, as well as international connectivity requirements, such as analog, T1, E1, PRI and E1 BRI. Built on a open architecture, the 3Com NBX system operates over a shared or switched Ethernet, which means that regardless of the customer's existing LAN environment, the NBX system will be able to be installed.
