One problem - how much debris does a semi-nomadic, hunting-based stone age society leave behind? Most waste will be organic, for starters, and if it's based on the exploitation of transitory (or even seasonal, but migratory) resources there just isn't much to go on.

Now, abandoned vehicles as an relict indication of current population densities, that should leave traces... I can imagine LA being a mine for iron ore in a few million years time - so long as recycling doesn't take too much hold... <g>
