Source? Well, I went to a philosophy or humanities discussion about 30 years ago where some people were talking about some writings by Augustine. I am pretty sure that is where I was most impressed with the idea of time as a temporal tool, useful mainly in our thought processes. I suspect there are many views on Augustine and time that don't match my own. I can't even be sure my current view matches Augustine, because over the years I have tweeked my thinking by talking to people like you. I am pretty sure Augustine talked about "present past" and "present future."

"Time is a tool that we use to speculate on what will be

Do you mean on what will be, or on what IS?? Take your time because I'm off to work."

Using the accurate term of "present future" we are thinking of what "is" and promoting a "to be". This is in the sense of trying to glimpse a nugget of eternity without full knowledge of what that nugget is composed of (speculation). Using the illusionary term "future" we are speculating on what will be. Since what we speculate on will never actually "be" except as a thought in the present, it doesn't matter that much what we call it. As much as I enjoy watching Bonanza, and calling it the "Good ole days;" "Bonanza land" exists only in the present as a state of mind...as with all historical references. I assure you that the state of mind I call "Bonanza Land" is far different from the state of mind my wife has for what she might call "Bonanza Land."
