I don't have breakdowns on union contribution percentages Dems vs. Repubs. Certainly, large corporations like to play both sides of the fence, but at least the numbers I look at show Corporation X giving X amount to the Democrat, and giving 30 percent above that figure to GOP candidates/causes. The GOP is still the political party of Big Business. Make no mistake about that.

It will be interesting to see what kind of campaign finance reform legislation GWB signs into law. He has a promise to keep to McCain, and even Sen. Mitch McConnell, Laborhater-Ky., has agreed to be a good boy and not lead a filibuster fight. I read a story tonight saying the intent of the McConnell faction will be to emasculate the legislation through amendments. We shall see.

Actually, although I think it's important to pass McCain-Feingold for purposes of reining in the billions that Big Business gives to fat-cat politicians, I'm not all too concerned about who outspends whom in campaigns. With such a steady diet of right-wing hate radio and TV shows, I don't think paid ads carry the clout they once did. They get lost in the constant right-wing bashing. More important is mobilization -- the ability to get out the vote, as organized labor did in Pennsylvania and Michigan on Nov. 7, and as the anti-Clinton forces did in border-Southern-Western states. I think we'll see more mobilization in '04, particularly among African-American and Hispanic voters.
