QUALCOMM CDMA Technologies Announces SSL Support for MSM3300 and Next-Generation MSM Product Lines

Secure Sockets Layer Technology Enables Electronic Commerce and Financial Transactions for CDMA Devices

SAN DIEGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 14, 2001--QUALCOMM Incorporated (Nasdaq: QCOM - news), pioneer and world leader of Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) digital wireless technology, today announced Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) support for the QUALCOMM CDMA Technologies (QCT) line of Mobile Station Modem (MSM(TM)) solutions. To provide end-to-end security for wireless Internet transactions, QCT offers a high-performance implementation of SSL that enables security for wireless browsers and secure wireless applications.

The SecureMSM(TM) SSL software and supporting encryption algorithms are integrated into the Dual-Mode Subscriber Software (DMSS(TM)) that is bundled with QCT's MSM3300(TM) integrated circuit solution, including the IFR3300(TM), RFR3100(TM), RFR3300(TM), RFT3100(TM) and SURF3300(TM) devices. SSL support will also be included in upcoming MSM integrated circuit solutions covering all major global standards.

``We believe that end-to-end secure mobile commerce transactions add great value to wireless devices,'' said Johan Lodenius, senior vice president of marketing and product management for QUALCOMM CDMA Technologies. ``For example, QCT's fully integrated SSL implementation enables direct and immediate access to Web-based financial services, allowing a user to complete a stock transaction wirelessly anywhere, instead of waiting until computer access or a broker is available.''

CDMA provides greater security over the air than legacy systems such as AMPS. However, Internet access requires CDMA-based network sessions to traverse multiple independent wireline Internet systems. Therefore, even CDMA Internet sessions are subject to the same vulnerabilities as other Internet traffic once on the public network. The QCT SecureMSM SSL implementation is based on public standards and is compatible with major Web servers worldwide.

SecureMSM Software Benefits:

Provides end-to-end security for Internet-based e-commerce and financial transactions, enabling mobile real-time access to financial and other high-priority secure transactions
Works with all major Web servers, allowing access to secure Web sites across the Internet
Highly tuned port provides desktop-level performance by utilizing on-chip Digital Signal Processor (DSP) computing resources
Does not require intermediary proxy servers that could pose a security risk
Standard interface integrates easily into Web browsers or secure applications
Accelerates development of secure Internet applications on CDMA devices
Provides a consistent, high-performance SSL implementation across all wireless applications
Bundled implementation eliminates need for wireless device vendors to individually license their own versions of SSL
SecureMSM Software Features:

OpenSSL(TM), standards-based implementation for maximum interoperability
Supports full 128-bit encryption (versus less robust 40-bit encryption)
Works with all major Web servers
Availability of commercial SSL-enabled handsets using QCT's MSM3300 integrated circuit solution is expected in the second half of calendar 2001.
