Thank you for posting my very favorite "quotation." We cannot be reminded of it too often. I assure you that I share your special distaste for hate crimes. We're merely disagreeing on how best to express that distaste.

We already have a tangled mess of too many laws. I do not see the utility of making that mess worse with what I consider redundant and symbolic laws.

We should all be offended by hate crimes and that added offense should be reflected in the sentences of the perpetrators. We do not need new laws to accomplish that. The press makes a very big deal out of hate crimes. The press is a very appropriate tool to use to make a statement about just how much they offend us. The movement for special hate crime legislation, however and IMO, is just another "hot issue" flag waving. I recognize that some people don't find hate crime particularly offensive, but for the rest of us, declining to get caught up in it is not a signal that people don't care.
