I really guess it all depends on what you're buying a machine to do. I agree that given the present level of software most users would do fine with a Celeron/Duron. The question is will they be equally happy in 3 years?

You have pinpointed the problem with P4. It offers very little value for the present, and in three years, buyers will be able to get something much better.

At the same time it devalues PIII, and drags the whole industry down in the process. The big drop in PC sales coincided with the release of P4.
