The big drop in PC sales coincided with the release of P4.
Now that's the biggest stretch I've seen yet... actually the whole post is really unworthy of you. I've typically found your posts to at least be somewhat insightful, but that post is the biggest load of tripe I've ever seen you offer on this board!
First, The P4 preforms as well as any other top end CPU on legacy aps... at least visibly. Sure, you're going to quote this number or that number, but Word is primarily limited by how fast you type. I ran this demonstration myself the other day. I watched CPU usage on my work laptop (P3 700MHz). I had Word running, and even when I typed at the high end of my ability, the CPU utilization rarely reached 10%. Most of the time the CPU utilization was at 1% to 4%. So clearly any modern CPU is pretty much overkill when it comes to basic office tasks...
As SSE2 optimized software is released (and it will be since both Intel and AMD are now incorporating it into their processors), the P4's performance will get better clock for clock as the P3 and K7's drops. So buying a P4 now gives you 1) a computer that's no perceptively worse on legacy applications, 2) Is vastly superior on currently available multimedia applications, and 3) will actually perform better as new software is released rather than worse. That's the very definition of current and long-term value...
If you're so willing to blame the P4 for an overall economic slowdown, what's your opinion on the P4 costing Gore the election? They happened at about the same timeframe, and using your "logic" they have to be related, yes? |
