What message do we send to society when we pat murderers on the back, say it's not that bad, and let them live in prison? And as to the deterrence factor of capital punishment and punishment in general, it worked for me and many others. Perhaps it's false to say punishment does not deter given the huge numbers who do not commit crime. I know, it's best to interview the criminal and hear him spout he didn't fear punishment and swallow it as gospel. Perhaps this is just a defense mechanism they have when they are too embarrassed to admit they were stupid and got caught. (Blasphemy, sorry ;))
