many people do not recognize the significance of hate oriented crime

I've been pretty close to a hate crime. Happened in the troubled year of 1968. I was driving down Springfield Avenue in Newark the day that Martin Luther King died. The radio in my car was broken so I didn't know what was going on but I was aware of an unsettling buzz in the air and an unusual number of people milling around. It wasn't until I got home that I heard the news. A woman driving down that same street returning from a shopping trim, just as I was, was killed by a sniper that afternoon. It could have been me.

I spent a lot of time reflecting on the indiscriminate killing of people of another race after that incident.

Doesn't mean that I think we need special hate laws.
