Looks like we now know why Nextel needed to raise all that cash, they are converting to CDMA. Donohue kept repeating the capacity advantage of 1X CDMA. Maybe I was right about iDEN not having enough capacity to compete?

Nextel CEO Donohue was asked about how they planned to compete with AT&T on 3G and data. After a pause, he made the following points:

(1) He couldn't understand AT&T's wireless strategy and the multiple networks they were going to have to support.

(2) EDGE was dead in his opinion, Nextel dropped it from consideration last year.

(3) To get to even GPRS for data, AWE has to first overlay a GSM network, and even then GPRS data rates will only be equal to what IDEN provides now.

(4) There was no way AWE would be competitive with NXTL and Sprint on data.

(5) The near term key for NXTL is the "incredible capacity lift for voice" that 1X will provide.

(6) Sprint will be first to market with 1X, NXTL second.

(7) NXTL 1X roll out will start mid 02 (initial) to early 03 (volume), still getting pricing from vendors, handsets available mid 02.

No mention of the Verizon competition.
