Municipal pothole fixers and sewer cleaners don't do anything that private contractors can't do.
I would refer you to the example of Indianapolis, IN, where Mayor Goldsmith(sp?) in an example of Reaganomics at the local level did in fact replace government services with contracted for replacements. The results have been almost universally condemned by the citizens of Indianapolis and by urban planners who've witnessed a steep decline in the quality of communal life in the city. For one example, the parks are a shambles. And it is a shame that political whimsy posing as philosophy and parsimoniousness posing as purpose have been allowed to be so utterly destructive.

PS: Yes, private water companies. How ironic that gasoline costs $1.60/gal and privately produced water can cost five times as much in the markets.
