Hyundai finds a DRAM that can make a profit

WASHINGTON -- Cash-strapped Hyundai Electronic Industries Co. Ltd., which is plagued by the current crashing DRAM prices, today (March 14) told investors it has a highly profitable memory chip to help its bottom line -- the venerable 16-megabit DRAM that now commands a small price premium.

Farhad Tabrizi, vice president of worldwide memory marketing, stressed that Hyundai, soon to be renamed Hynix Semiconductor, will continue to produce and support a wide family of 16-Mbit DRAMs for consumer electronics, communications and peripherals.

As other memory chip firms vacated the 16-Mbit market, the few remaining suppliers have found prices of this generation continuing to be strong in face of the crash of 64-Mbit and 128-Mbit chips.

Tabrizi said Hyundai still makes trailing-edge technology DRAMs such as fast page mode and EDO, which continues to be in demand to support products with long extended lifetimes.
