Sort of like "TheStory" for MSFT ca. 1990 was that the PC is increasingly important, and mission critical, and MSFT's solution was growing in popularity over AAPL's and IBM's.

I don't think this is why MSFT was a popular stock. What matters is earnings. Microsoft delivers, or delivered, spectacularly on earnings. Network Appliance has also been delivering spectacularly on earnings. If they did not, I would be out of this stock, story or no story. I think you underestimate NTAP if you say it's about the "story."
