>>QUESTION: Does ZIP Have to Replace the Floppy to Become a Standard?

yes

the answer is to all your questions of what will replace your floppy for small files--

the internet

it is easier and much faster for me to send someone a small file then to
1. find a damn floppy which is empty or has stuff i forgot about long ago
2.wait and wait for my floppy to boot
3. wait and wait and wait and wait for file to copy from hard drive
4. hope i don't lose floppy

instead i attatch file to email

i know it will get to where i want to go

do i want my floppy out of my computer - so much you won't believe

imagine if you had a brand new 210mz mac with 16x cdrom 2gig super fast hard drive 96meg of ram and ...
1.4 floppy drive

a drive that hasn't change in 10 years!!!!

every other part of computer as exponentcially gotten faster and better except the floppy

time for it to go
