Bombardier Receives an Order to Deliver 126 Double-Deck Vehicles to the Netherlands Railways
MONTREAL, QUEBEC--MARCH 15, 2001 - 11:15 EST Bombardier Transportation was awarded an order from the Netherlands Railways (NS Reizigers BV) for the delivery of 126 vehicles type IRM, consisting of 21 six-car double-deck electrical multiple units (EMUs). This represents a follow-up order based on a contract signed in February, 2000 for the delivery of 252 of these vehicles. This order, which is valued at approximately $318.7 million Cdn (225 million euros), brings the total number of IRM-type rolling stock ordered by NS Reizigers since 1992 to 668 vehicles.
The Bombardier Transportation site in Aachen, Germany, will be responsible for the complete vehicle assembly, testing and after sales. The body shells of the vehicles will be manufactured at the site in Görlitz, also located in Germany. Delivery of the vehicles will start in the second quarter of the year 2004 and be completed by the second quarter of 2005.
The new double-deck vehicles will be integrated into NS Reiziger's existing fleet of IRM rolling stock. The IRM vehicle concept (InterRegioMaterieel, or intercity rolling stock), developed specifically for intercity traffic in the Netherlands, helps to accommodate the increased ridership on the Dutch network. In addition to their high passenger capacity, the double-deck vehicles are characterised by reduced energy consumption and low life-cycle costs (LCC). Low noise levels, comfortable seating, spacious entrance areas, and a lift for catering trolleys to provide service even on the upper deck, are some of the main factors contributing to a pleasant ride for the passengers.
Dr. Peter Buttmann, President of Bombardier Transportation, Continental Europe stated: "The fact that NS Reizigers has once more opted for the IRM concept underlines the reliability and attractiveness of this vehicle type which has proven itself in revenue service since 1992. We are looking forward to continuing the long-standing, very constructive relationship with NS Reizigers."
