Update for BriteSmile:

BriteSmile announces completion of key studies as steps to secure ADA approval.

WALNUT CREEK, Calif., March 9 /PRNewswire/ -- BriteSmile Inc. (NASDAQ:BSML) announced today that researchers from Boston's prestigious Forsyth Institute will present two clinical studies on the safety and efficacy of the BriteSmile procedure at the American Association of Dental Research (AADR) Annual Meeting in Chicago, March 7-10.

The papers detail the safety and efficacy of BriteSmile's unique light/hydrogen peroxide gel combination, compared to the gel or light alone. The second study examined the effect of BriteSmile on tooth color change as measured by a colorimeter.

Each of the studies was completed in full compliance with the American Dental Association (ADA) guidelines and standard scientific national and international standards. The abstracts were also published in the Journal of Dental Research. The completion of independent clinical studies, including the two studies cited above, is part of the content protocol outlined by the ADA for BriteSmile's application for ADA approval for the procedure.

"We are very pleased to have the opportunity to present the findings of the Forsyth Institute studies to a distinguished body like the AADR. Not only do these findings confirm our own research, but also validate the results that BriteSmile's 2000 dentists and 100,000 whitening patients see every day," said John Reed, BriteSmile Chief Executive Officer. "We eagerly anticipate the completion of the Forsyth Institute's on-going research and are confident that the results will greatly assist BriteSmile's effort to secure ADA approval."

The clinical studies found an average whitening effect of 8.34 shade change increments and no unexpected side effects. Additionally, the Forsyth Institute found that the combination of the proprietary BriteSmile light and proprietary BriteSmile gel resulted in a significant increment in tooth whitening not achieved by either peroxide or light alone.

The Forsyth Institute also found that 96.6 percent of the patients who experienced the proprietary BriteSmile procedure said that the treatment moderately or greatly increased the whiteness of their teeth. Of those participants who had the peroxide treatment alone, only 39.3 percent noticed the same degree of whitening.

The preliminary findings of the Forsyth Institute studies were first released in September 2000.

The Forsyth Institute in Boston, Massachusetts is the world's leading independent organization dedicated to oral, craniofacial, and related biomedical science. Since its inception in 1910, Forsyth has pioneered major advances in the microbiology of oral infectious diseases, including dental decay and periodontal disease.
