I would disavow the "Noble Savage" idea, and suppose that there was a discreet point where humans originated, much like Adam and Eve. That is why we cannot quite fill in the fossil record, because there is a sharp discontinuity between almost- human and human. Why would you "suppose" that? The fossil record is incomplete for practically everything, I doubt there are many higher mammals than have any fewer "sharp discontinuities" than human evolution has. Nobody was keeping a file. It's easy to hypothesize a God to ease your personal angst, but what you suppose doesn't really bear a lot of weight here.
