Keith:

There's clearly a big PR wave building with lots of staying power behind it - firm China Unicom build out orders, NXTL adopting 1X for its 3G migration path, Sprint 3G migration announcement next week and demo of 1X/144 kbps data rates, then Verizon with a similar announcement, roll out of real apps that take full advantage of 144 kbps data rates, CDMA 2000 license in Korea, etc. etc. I wonder how the AWE/DoCoMo 9.6 kbps i-mode apps are going to look to US users in comparison to Sprint/Verizon apps at 144 kbps?

By the end of the year, GSM/GPRS may be looking pretty dead in the water in comparison. And rumblings from Euro carriers may start soon thereafter.
