SG Cowen said in a research note to clients this morning that Judge Robert Payne made a pre-trial ruling, siding with an expert witness from Infineon Technologies (IFX: news, msgs, alerts) , which in effect limits the scope of Rambus' patents on synchronous dynamic random access memory (SDRAM) and double data rate (DDR) memory.

Rambus did not immediately return calls to CBS.MarketWatch.com.
