Optelecom Awarded Phase II Contract for Dual-Use Optics
GAITHERSBURG, MD, March 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Optelecom, Inc. (Nasdaq: OPTC - news) today announced it has received a United States Air Force Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Phase II contract for the investigation of dual-use fiber optic technology.

Wright Patterson Air Force Base will oversee the award granted to continue work in aeronautical sciences and flight control technology for military airframes begun under an earlier Phase I award. Under the terms of the contract, Optelecom will develop pre-production prototypes of a multimode Wavelength Division Multiplexing tap, providing critical photonics capability for Air Force flight control systems.

``In addition to use on military and commercial aircraft, the WDM tap we are developing has important potential commercial applications,'' stated Ron Smith, Optelecom's Director of New Technology. ``Once low cost communication systems providing optical bus and drop/insert functionality are developed, the groundwork is laid for deployment of similar systems for fiber-to-the home (FTTH), enabling high definition television (HDTV), high speed Internet and telephone service to residential neighborhoods over a single optical fiber.''

Optelecom, Inc. designs, manufactures and markets photonic components, video communication systems technology, business video and financial market data information systems. From simple baseband transmitters to complex broadband systems and video switches, Optelecom offers innovative technologies that meet our customers needs. Headquarters are located at 9300 Gaither Road, Gaithersburg, MD 20877; telephone 301-840-2121.
