It seems that there is a fundamental gulf between those who think that monetary and fiscal intervention can "save" us and those that think that the cycle must be played out (the Austrian school?).

Early response to rate cuts so far do seem to support the latter view.

If we assume that this must be played out, I wonder if this recession will be short and deep, with both traits reflective greater efficiency of information dispersal and new factors such as improved supply chain management.

The dark view is that these very same factors are what are contributing to rapidity of decline, and positive feedback loops may be reinforced to a greater degree, leading the global economy who knows where.
