Helmut Schmidt was Euro-cool......how the hell did the Germans go from him to Kohl? The contrasts are stunning... Schmidt: Intellectual, great English, cool, hip and fashionable...great international representative Kohl: Well, the opposite...even his German was bad! (Although the old "Helmut Kohl" jokes were funny) One credit to Kohl...he was a survivor (Clinton had nothing on him).....I have no clue how he did it....he obviously knew how to work the party support......I used to laugh when he'd go on his 2 week "Spa" holidays in order to lose the 40 lbs he had gained during the year...talk about failed economic programs-g....only Boris's election jig tops that on the funny meter.. Nice parting gift from Kohl: "Ossie" Sondersteuer....the gift that keeps on TAKING! (Actually, no need to answer the political part of the original question....I know it had something to do with the FDP switching to CDU....and, well, SPD didn't have most successful economic policies at time- wasn't that the recession of '82?.....my original point was more in terms of STYLE)..
